Wood-Ridge is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey. Incorporated in 1984 from portions of Bergen Township, it was formed during the Boroughitis phenomenon in which 26 boroughs in the county were formed during the year 1894. Measuring roughly one square mile, this small town is bordered to the south by Carlstadt, to the north by Lodi and Hasbrouck Heights, to the west by Wallington, and to the east by Moonachie. Wood-Ridge isn't a particularly populous borough, with only a population of roughly 8,000. However, with its small area, it has one of the largest population densities in the state, ranking 63rd of 566 towns. Its population is relatively wealthy, with a median household income of around $90,000. Transportation in Wood-Ridge offers many convenient opportunities to reach Manhattan and other parts of New Jersey. Wood-Ridge is served by the Pascack Valley Line at Wood-Ridge Station, which offers service to Hoboken Terminal. From there, commuters can access New York Penn Station, as well as other stations served by NJ Transit rail service. Additionally, the Wesmont station, which will run on the Bergen County line, is set to open in Wood-Ridge in late 2015. A variety of New Jersey Transit bus routes also serve the city: the 76 bus goes through Wood-Ridge to Newark Penn Station, and the 144, 145, 148, 162, and 164 buses all run to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Route 17 also passes through Wood-Ridge this provides access to the George Washington Bridge and Lincoln Tunnel. Children in Wood-Ridge attend schools of the Wood-Ridge School District. Students attend Catherine E. Doyle Elementary School through fifth grade and Gretta R. Ostrovsky Middle School in grades six through eight. Students at Wood-Ridge High School, which serves children in grades nine through twelve, are joined by a selection of students from the neighboring Moonachie as part of a sending/receiving relationship with the Moonachie School District. The Wood-Ridge recreation department offers plenty of activities for community members. They sponsor basketball and softball programs for adults, and youth programs in baseball, basketball, football, cheerleading, softball, soccer, track and field, wrestling, and a teen night. They also hold yearly summer recreation programs for children. The Wood-Ridge community is served by the Wood-Ridge Memorial Library. Located in Hackensack Street, the library offers a number of services, including programs for children, young adults, a reference library, circulation services (as part of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System), free wireless internet access, desktop computers available for use, ESL instruction, a Kindle checkout service, and ebook rentals, for all of Wood-Ridge's resident bookworms.
