Living In: Williston Park

Share Info About Williston Park
Williston Park is an incorporated village located in the town of North Hempstead in Nassau County on New York's Long Island. Measuring only 0.6 square miles, it is a small neighborhood, albeit a fairly populous one. It is bordered to the north by Searingtown and Albertson, to the east by East Williston, to the south by Mineola, and to the west by Herricks. Williston Park traces its history back to 1926. Originally a part of East Williston (named for Samuel Willis, an early settler from the 17th century), the land was purchased by William Chatlos to create an affordable planned community for New York City dwellers who wanted to move to the suburbs. After the village was completed, Williston Park and East Williston experienced a schism in which residents voted to break from East Williston and formally incorporate as their own village. Today, Williston Park is a solidly middle-class neighborhood. It is a popular neighborhood with those who commute into Manhattan, as it is an easy 45 minute drive into the city via the Long Island Expressway. For those who wish to commute by rail, the East Williston Long Island Rail Road station lies on the border between Williston Park and East Williston. From there, commuters can take the Oyster Bay branch of the Main Line to Manhattan or other parts of Long Island. Students in Williston Park attend one of two school districts: the Herricks Union Free School District and the Mineola Union Free School District. Schools in the Herricks Union Free School District include Searingtown Elementary School, Center Street Elementary School, Denton Avenue Elementary School, Herricks Middle School, and Herricks High School. Center Street Elementary School is located within the borders of Williston Park, and the other schools are within neighboring communities. The Mineola Union Free School District contains Hampton Street School and Meadow Drive School for pre-kindergarten through second grade, Jackson Avenue School for grades three and four, Mineola Middle School for grades five through seven, and Mineola High School for grades eight through graduation. Both Herricks High School and Mineola High School are known as excellent schools, with Herricks High School being ranked as the 17th best in New York State. Residents of Williston Park can avail themselves of the services of the Williston Park Public Library. It offers many programs for children and adults. Neighborhood kids can enjoy a Story Hour for Tots, a Tiny Tykes group, Lego classes, and Pajama Story Hours. Adults can take classes in topics like Computer Basics or Microsoft Office, participate in a book club, or hear visiting authors discuss their works. The library also offers standard library services such as book circulation and access to research databases, and offers digital downloads to eReaders. The library also circulates passes to local landmarks like the Long Island Children's Museum, the Vanderbilt, the Cradle of Aviation, the Firefighter's Museum, and the Nassau County Museum of Art.
