Also called The Hub of the Pascack Valley, the borough of Westwood is located in Bergen County, New Jersey. With an area of 2.3 square miles, it's of average size for both the state of New Jersey (it's the 387th largest of 566 in the state) and in the county (42nd of 70). With a population of roughly 11,000, it's slightly more populous than average, ranking 224th of 566 in the state and 33rd of 70 in the county. The population is well-off, with a median household income of roughly $80,000. Children in Westwood attend schools in the Westwood Regional School District. Children in grades K-5 can attend four elementary schools: Berkeley Avenue Elementary School, Brookside Elementary School, Jessie F. George Elementary School, and Washington Elementary School. Students from those four schools then attend Westwood Regional Middle School for grades 6 and 7, and Westwood Regional High School for grades 8-12. Westwood provides convenient transportation options to Manhattan and other areas of New Jersey. Commuters are able to catch the Pascack Valley Line, which provides service to the Hoboken Terminal. This provides connections to other New Jersey Transit rail lines, the PATH train into New York City, and the New York Waterways ferry service. Bus route 165 also provides service to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and the Rockland Coaches will take commuters to Port Authority or the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. There are many activities to enjoy in Westwood. Chief among these is the Fritz Deitl Ice Rink, home to the Doug Brown Power Skating programs. These include open ice sessions, figure skating lessons, skating school, and open hockey. Westwood is also home to Westwood Plaza, an outdoor shopping mall. Those who love the great outdoors can appreciate the town's many parks, which include such amenities as ball fields, basketball courts, picnic areas, streams with seasonal fishing, ponds, ice skating, tot lots, annual movies in the park, and a bandstand. The town's recreation department offers a variety of programs for children, among them art classes; dance classes, including ballet, tap, and hip hop; cooking classes; field hockey; robotics; piano lessons, soccer practices; tennis lessons; volleyball; basketball; and Mommy/Daddy & Me programs. Adults can play volleyball or basketball, take tennis lessons, or take communal fitness classes in the park. Amateur musicians are welcome to join the Westwood Community Band, an avocational group that presents summer concerts in Veterans' Memorial Park.
