Share Info About West Hempstead
Living in West Hempstead, New York, has long appealed to residents looking for both pretty, quiet side streets combined with a real sense of community and continuity, as evidenced by the number of West Hempstead children who, upon growing up and leaving home, move just a few blocks across town rather than fleeing town. Located in Nassau County on Long Island, and technically a "hamlet", West Hempstead is not part of neighboring Hempstead proper; in the 1990s, in fact, there was a move by the local Chamber of Commerce to rename the hamlet "Mayfair Park" to distinguish the community, but residents spoke out against the change, and the topic was shelved. Much of West Hempstead life revolves around family activities, whether at the solid public schools; at the $10 million public library, still fresh six years after its grand opening and vibrant with programs that make it as much a community center as a library; and the recently renovated Hall's Pond Park, eleven acres of pathways, lawns, benches, and the site of numerous town events and performances as well as a popular outdoor ice skating rink in the winter. Many West Hempstead residents also take advantage of the nearby Echo Park Indoor Pool complex (complete with diving tank and saunas), and the Hempstead Lake State Park, where you can fish in the County's largest lake as well as enjoy tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, a vintage wooden carousel (hand carved!), bridle trails and a picnic pavilion. The Long Island Rail Road will get you to Midtown Manhattan's Penn Station in a manageable 50 minutes or so, and daily commuters make up a fair proportion of the West Hempstead population. Downtown West Hempstead has been enjoying a long-overdue revitalization, with the recent demolition of a couple of key eyesores and the opening of new shops, restaurants, and businesses.
