West Brighton is a small neighborhood located centrally along the North Shore of Staten Island in the borough of New York City. The neighborhood is bordered by New Brighton to the east, Port Richmond to the west, the waters of the Kill Van Kull to the north, and the communities of Sunnyside and Castleton Corners to the south. West Brighton is noted for being an old-fashioned neighborhood. It has everything residents might need right in its vicinity bakeries, banks, drugstores, and restaurants from Irish Pubs to Italian eateries. Many locals comment that the area tends to attract a high percentage of civil servants such as teachers, police officers and firefighters. A lot of families also relocate to West Brighton to take advantage of the relatively low housing costs, safe neighborhood and classic architecture of the homes. Many locals tend to stay in the area, and real estate agents remark that the housing turnaround is very low, as families often stay in the same homes for generations. The architecture of the neighborhood has remained unchanged for many years. The homes are older, albeit not rundown, and give the neighborhood a classic, historical touch. Those looking for new construction homes might do better to look elsewhere on Staten Island. There are many activities for locals to partake in located directly in West Brighton that also draw people from other parts of Staten Island and tourists from the greater New York City area as well. Theses include the Staten Island Zoo, Snug Harbor, which is home to baseball fields, the Staten Island Conservatory of Music, public gardens and a children museum, and St. Peter's Cemetery, Staten Island's Olden Roman Catholic cemetery. West Brighton is also home to the Richmond University Medical Centre, which is an academic affiliate of the New York Medical College's School of Medicine. As can be expected, many who work in the medical industry live in the area as well. The neighborhood is also known for having an abundance of delicious restaurants of all cuisines, and many unique independent shops and boutiques. Located ten minutes from the Staten Island Ferry at the St. George Ferry Terminal, West Brighton is an ideal location for those working in Manhattan. Families send their children to any of the following public schools, based on their address: P.S. 45, P.S. 18 and P.S. 19.
