Wallington, New Jersey is a small borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey. The borough gets its name from Walling Van Winkle, an early settler who built a house in the area. Founded in 1894, it was the last borough of 26 to be incorporated that year during Boroughitis, in which 26 new boroughs were incorporated in Bergen County in quick succession. Only a square mile large, this tiny town has a population of roughly 11,500. Wallington resides in the southern corner of Bergen County, bordered by Passaic to the west, Wood-Ridge and Hasbrouck Heights to the east, Garfield to the north, and Rutherford and East Rutherford to the south. The Passaic and Saddle Rivers make up its northwestern boundaries, giving the town the shape of a heart. The town's main thoroughfare is County Route 507, which runs from Harrison, New Jersey to the New York/New Jersey state line at Mahwah. While there is no train stop in Wallington, New Jersey Transit bus service does provide access to Port Authority Bus Terminal via the 160 and 161 bus routes. The population of Wallington is solidly middle-class, with a median household income of roughly $60,000, and a per capita income of about $27,000. Half of the borough's population consists of married couples living together, and a quarter of households include at least one child under the age of 18. Children in Wallington attend the Wallington Public Schools, consisting of Jefferson Elementary School (grades K-3), Frank W. Gavlak Elementary School (grades K-6), and Wallington High School (grades 7-12). The academic performance at Wallington High is known to be high compared to other high schools across the state. The John F. Kennedy Memorial Library in Wallington offers library services to members of the town: in addition to a mobile library, children's programs, and reference services, they regularly hold events, including story time for children, movie nights, and bingo. The recreation department in the borough of Wallington sponsors many sport leagues for local youth, including the Wallington Little League, Wallington Junior Football Organization, Wallington Junior Basketball, and Wallington Youth Soccer. For those looking for sports that are more adult- or violence-oriented, Wallington has the adults of the town covered. Wallington hosts the New Jersey Grizzlies, who are a professional inline hockey team that competes in the Professional Inline Hockey Association. Wallington also hosts the Garden State Rollergirls, a flat track roller derby team. Although the league is Newark-based, their two teams, the Ironbound Maidens and Brick City Bruisers, bout at Wallington's Inline Skating Club of America.
