Uniondale is a hamlet and census-designated place located in the town of Hempstead in New York's Nassau County. It is also a popular suburb of New York City. Measuring slightly less than three square miles in area, it is bordered by Hempstead to the west, Roosevelt to the south, East Meadow to the east, and East Garden City to the north. It is a racially-diverse and solidly middle-class community. While there are no Long Island Rail Road stations in Uniondale, it is a convenient areas for those commuting to Manhattan via car. It is bordered by both the Meadowbrook State Parkway and Southern State Parkway, so vehicular commuters can reach Manhattan in approximately one hour. Students in Uniondale attend the Uniondale School District. Elementary school students attend one of five schools: Walnut Street School, Smith Street School, Northern Parkway School, Grand Avenue School, and California Avenue School. They then attend one of two middle schools: Turtle Hook Middle School and Lawrence Road Middle School. Finally, all students matriculate into Uniondale High School. Students can participate in a variety of school activities, including DECA (a club for aspiring marketing professionals), Latinos Unidos, and Robotics Club. The school also offers advanced courses in Algebra, Trigonometry, Anatomy and Physiology, Calculus, and English. Uniondale also has an alternative high school which emphasizes interpersonal relationships and support programs in a non-traditional setting. Uniondale is also home to part of the Hofstra University campus. While most of the campus lies in the neighboring East Garden City, a section of the campus does extend into Uniondale. This includes the James M. Shuart Stadium, home of the Pride (formerly the Flying Dutchmen). Although Hofstra University no longer has an official football team (it was retired in 2009), it is still occasionally home to football games, including the Long Island All-Star Football Game and the Fun City Bowl. The stadium is also home to several lacrosse games, and is the home stadium of the New York Lizards. Shuart Stadium also hosts several soccer games, and is the home of the annual Newsday Marching Band Festival. Uniondale is also home to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Home of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, it is a popular destination for hockey fans. It also hosts several large exhibitions and trade shows, and is a popular arena for touring musicians. Artists and groups as varied as Elvis Presley, David Bowie, Queen, Phish, Pink Floyd, Madonna, The Spice Girls, Billy Joel, and Madonna have performed in the arena, and it was the site of Frank Zappa's final live U.S. performance.
