Share Info About Tottenville
The southernmost neighborhood in Staten Island is Tottenville. It lies directly east across the Arthur Kill from Perth Amboy, NJ, while it's southern waterfront faces the Raritan Bay. The original settlement name was Bentley Manor, after the a ship owned by one of it's first settlers. In 1869, the area gained it's current name, and is thought to honor the Totten family, which was locally familiar and important. Of course, the original inhabitants were the Raritan band of the Unami Indians, which was a brank of the Lenape of Delaware nation. Burial Ridge is the largest pre-European burial ground, and is located in Conference House Park. As with many towns that have good waterfront access, at one time factories lined the western shoreline. There was also a strong boat building business at one time, and like other communities in Staten Island, oyster harvesting was a good business until water pollution made it unsafe. The good news is that oyster harvesting was able to resume in 2005. Businesses have been largely restricted to Main Street over the years, until recently when a second commercial area began to emerge in the northern end on Page Avenue. The residential section has been know for having a number of large homes. However, as of late developers have been buying the properties, tearing down these homes, and replacing them with new townhomes. Despite a steady increase in residential construction since the 1990's, the area remains one of the least densely populated in NYC. The Staten Island Railway has maintained it's terminus in Tottenville since 1860. In addition, 3 buses and 3 expresses buses serve the community.
