Share Info About Stratford
Stratford is located on the southern coast of Fairfield County, where the Housatonic River empties into the Long Island Sound. It is bordered to the west by Bridgeport, to the north by Trumbull, and to the east by Shelton. It was founded in 1639 by the Puritans as a plantation. The community became a growing town, and the name was changed to Stratford (after Stratford-on-Avon in England) in 1643. Originally Stratford covered a much larger area. Over the years, a number of towns broke off and incorporated separately. Those include Bridgeport, Shelton, and Trumbull, among others. Many families from the original settlers continue to make their home here today, over 350 years after they first arrived. But not all have stayed. Some broke off and started new communities (Newark, NJ for one, was started by settlers from Stratford). US President Gerald Ford was a descendant of one of the founding families of the Stratford community. Five islands are within the town, all in the Housatonic River. None are inhabitable due to their low elevation. Those living in Stratford can enjoy 3 beaches, Long Beach, Russian Beach and Short Beach. Available activities vary by location, but include swimming, fishing, birdwatching, picnicking, playing on sports courts and fields, and golfing.
