Share Info About Shelton
Shelton, CT is located about 12 miles inland from the Long Island Sound, and is between the border of the town of Fairfield, and the Housatonic River. Settled as part of Stratford in 1639 by colonists, in 1789 it split off and become Huntington. Incorporation as a city occurred in 1915. Later consolidation with the town of Huntington, in 1919, resulted in the current town of Shelton. For years, the town flourished as a center for manufacturing. Today, the people living in Shelton know it as a thriving example or urban revitalization, after some tough times late in the twentieth century. The name Shelton came, not surprisingly, from a manufacturing village started in the 1860's. It was named for the Shelton Company and it's founder, Edward N. Shelton. Manufacturing was an important part of Shelton up until the 1970's and 80's. Since then, a number of office buildings have been constructed, pulling away businesses from more expensive areas like Stamford and Greenwich. Completing the turnaround, a number of industrial buildings in the downtown area have been re-purposed, including some as luxury condos. A streetscape improvement project was undertaken, with power lines buried, trees planted, and sidewalks constructed of brick and cobblestones.A park was created on the site of one factory that could not be saved, and was torn down. All of this work and investment, both public and private, led Bloomberg Businessweek to call Shelton "The Best Affordable Suburb in CT" in both 2009 and 2010.
