Share Info About Roosevelt
Roosevelt is a small hamlet located within in town of Hempstead in Nassau County on New York's Long Island. Measuring only 1.8 square miles, it is a small area. It is bordered by Uniondale to the north, North Merrick to the east, Freeport to the south, and Baldwin to the west. The Southern State Parkway runs to the north, and the Meadowbrook State Parkway forms the eastern border, making this hamlet a convenient area for commuters into Manhattan, as the trip can be made in less than an hour in favorable traffic conditions. While there is no Long Island Rail Road station located in Roosevelt proper, those commuting by rail need to only go slightly south to Freeport, where the Babylon line offers service to New York's Penn Station. The community now known as Roosevelt has had several other names. Initially it was known as Rum Point, perhaps due to the fact that the area had two taverns serving a mere twelve to fifteen houses located in the town. The area later became known as Greenwich Point after the Civil War, at least partially due to the growing temperance movement. At this point, the area was a busy agricultural and manufacturing center. Common industries included farming, mills, fly making (for fly fishing), brick making, blacksmithing, shipbuilding, and early aeronautics. With the establishment of an independent post office, the town was forced to change its name from Greenwich Point, as there was already a village registered with that name. The name Roosevelt was chosen in honor of Theodore Roosevelt, the newly-installed President. Students in Roosevelt attend schools within the Roosevelt Union Free School District. It is currently the only school district in New York to have been taken over by the state. Younger students attend one of three primary schools: Ulysses Byas Elementary School, Centennial Avenue Elementary School, and Washington Rose Elementary School. Students then attend Roosevelt Middle School, and finally, Roosevelt High School for grades nine through twelve. Roosevelt has many notable current and former residents. These include actor Gabriel Casseus (Black Hawk Down); Aaron and Damion Hall (of the band Guy); Chuck D and Flava Flav of Public Enemy; football player John Mackey; actor Steve White (Do the Right Thing); comedian and actor Eddie Murphy; and radio personality Howard Stern.
