Living In: Ridgefield

Share Info About Ridgefield
Living in Ridgefield, Connecticut, definitely has a nostalgic, New England feel to it, with its picturesque winding roads lined with stone walls, and a small-town village center complete with bandstand. Located in Fairfield County, in the southwest section of the state, Ridgefield has a long history (some 300 years), about 35 square miles of land, and a population approaching 25,000 people. Most of the housing here is of the single family home variety--and many of these, whether classic or contemporary, are spectacular--but there are some garden apartments and the like available close to the town center, where you'll find boutiques, cafes, and grocers. Ridgefield is bordered to the north by Danbury; to the east by Bethel, Redding, and Weston; to the south by Wilton; and to the west by the Westchester County, New York State towns of North Salem, South Salem, and Lewisboro. Unsurprisingly for such a bucolic setting, living in Ridgefield is often an appealing option for families. The public schools here are excellent, among the best in the country, and a recent $100 million expansion and modernization at all three levels--elementary, middle, and high school--ensured that they'll stay that way for years to come. Living in Ridgefield also means access to the sparkling town recreation center, with a gym, fitness center, indoor pool, and child care facilities. There's even an 18-hole public golf course for Ridgefield residents. Commuters to New York City usually take advantage of the Metro North railway station in nearby Katohah (about 60 minutes to Grand Central), rather than using the Branchville station within the town, which, because of transfers, takes some 40 minutes longer to get to midtown Manhattan.
