Living In: Port Washington

Share Info About Port Washington
If you're looking for a neighborhood with genuine feeling of community--a place where, for example, residents might join forces to save the local bookstore--living in Port Washington, Long Island, might be just the sort of inviting, even old-fashioned town for you. Located at the easternmost end of Long Island's North Fork, Port Washington (or, "the Port", as the locals say) is almost ridiculously pretty with its meandering coastline, rolling hills, nature preserves with spectacular water views, marinas and golf courses galore. Even Port Washington's commercial district is like a postcard, with Main Street hard by the picturesque Town Dock, and Shore Road running parallel to Bay Walk Park, which features two-thirds of a mile of public waterfront featuring piers (one with a gazebo, another for fishing), a dock and a water taxi service. But Port Washington life isn't only about beautiful spaces and friendly people. The Port Washington public school is ranked among the best on Long Island (by the way: residents of Baxter Estates, Manorhaven, Port Washington North, Sands Point, Beacon Hill, Beacon Hill Colony, Manhasset Isle, New Salem, and northern Flower Hill are all considered to be part of Port Washington). There's a fair amount of culture on offer right in town, from art galleries to a six-screen movie theater to the Landmark community center, with its 425-seat Jeanne Rimsky Theater. Sands Point Preserve, all 216 glorious waterfront acres, was once a Guggenheim estate, and is now open to the public for hikes and tours. And in case things do get too sleepy, there's always the Long Island Rail Road, which offers commuters and fun-seekers alike express trains which will get to Midtown Manhattan's Penn Station in just over 35 minutes.
