Port Richmond is located on the North Shore of Staten Island along the waterfront of the Kill Van Kull. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Staten Island. There are several historic sites enjoyed by both visitors, and those living in Port Richmond, one of which is the famous Ritz Theater. The theater was built in 1924 and held up to 2,100 seats. It was built by the same people who were responsible for the construction of the Liberty, New Dorp, and St. George Theatres, all of which are located in Staten Island as well. During the 1950’s-1960’s the theater became home to many a rock concert with notable performers like Jethro Tull and the Kinks having performed there. It held numerous concerts and roller skating arenas as well. Its famous murals are still on the walls today. Staten Island’s oldest park, Veteran’s Park, is in Port Richmond and is a classic “village green.” The average household size is 3.1 people, and the percentage of family households is 63.9 percent of the population. The number of married couple families among all households is 34.7 percent, and the percentage of married couple families with children is 16.6 percent. There is an estimated 14,393 people per square mile. The median rent living in Port Richmond is $969. The average estimated value of housing units in two unit structures in 2010 was $408,686. The median household income in 2011 was $50,139. For the traveler there are several bus stops within Port Richmond, including the Castleton bus department with stops at Castleton and Jewett Avenue. The local and express bus has these following stop sS40, S44, S46, S48, S53, S54, S57, S59, & S66. Additionally it offers limited stops: S89, S90, S94, S96, and S98. x10, x14, x30. Port Richmond is going through a cultural renaissance with younger residents moving into the area. The median age for males is 29.2, and the median age for females is 32.9 years old. Additionally Port Richmond is very pro-safety for its residents with its newly inducted “Crime Response Team.” This Crime Response time is a group of citizens that work the NYPD to report suspicious activity and to prevent violence in the neighborhood. This call to action is a proactive precaution to help residents feel more secure in their neighborhood. Additionally they organize a series of meetings for the community to facilitate community dialogue in an open and helpful atmosphere. Furthermore for the late night explorers they also set up safe spaces around the neighborhood, where willing businesses that are open late, such as bodegas or delis, offer their space. The New York Public Library operates the Port Richmond branch. The Port Richmond library is located on 75 Bennett Street at Heberton Ave. Education wise, the Port Richmond High School building was new constructed in 1993. Port Richmond High School is one of the best High Schools on Staten Island. The High School has a reputation for excellence in sports and academics. Newsweek listed Port Richmond High School in its list of Best High Schools for several years.
