New Dorp is a neighborhood on the eastern shore of the borough of Staten Island in New York, NY. One of the larger neighborhoods on the island, it is bordered to the north by Grant City, to the south by Oakwood, to the west by Egbertville, and to the east by New Dorp Beach. One of the major towns on the island pre-suburbanization, New Dorp was particularly a center of activity on the island during the American Revolution. It remained an important commercial center on the Island through the 1960's, with the spread of shopping centers along Hylan Boulevard. The area was originally populated by American Indians, particularly members of the Lenape tribe. The first European settlers were Dutch (New Dorp is an Anglicization of Nieuw Dorp, the Dutch for New Village). In the 19th century, members of the Vanderbilt family lived in the area; some are interred at Moravian Cemetery, located in the neighborhood. Today, New Dorp is a middle-class neighborhood, with a population of largely Italian-American, Irish-American, Albanian-American, Polish-American, and Russian-American descent. Students in New Dorp attend P.S. 41 - New Dorp and I.S. 2 - George L. Egbert. There are several high schools in the area, including Staten Island Technical High School and New Dorp High School. There are also a number of private elementary schools in the neighborhood, including Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish Elementary School and New Dorp Christian Academy. There are many convenient transportation options in the area. Those who commute by rail can take the Staten Island Railway at the New Dorp station. This provides transit to other areas of Staten Island, as well as the ferry terminal at St. George.
