The hamlet of Merrick is located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. Merrick spans approximately 5.2 square miles and is home to just over twenty two thousand people. Merrick is derived from the word meroke,' meaning peaceful to the area's former indigenous inhabitants, the Algonquian tribe. The Long Island Rail Road provides public transportation to the community of Merrick. In combination the MTA New York City Transit, the commute to Manhattan takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. The same trip takes approximately one hour travelling the cross Island Parkway. The students of Merrick attend schools from the Merrick Union Free School District, the North Merrick Union Free School District, and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. These districts include the following schools: Birch School, Roland A. Chatterton School, Norman J. Levy Lakeside School, Park Avenue School, Camp Avenue School, Harold D. Fayette School, Old Mill Road School, Merrick Avenue Middle School, Sanford H. Calhoun High School, and John F. Kennedy High School. The Merrick Library has served the community and students of Merrick for over one hundred years. Edward C. Cammann and Richard P. Kent established the Merrick Library in 1891. Cow Meadow Park and Preserve is a one hundred and seventy-one acre park that serves to protect the natural beauty of its marine wetlands, salt marsh, mud flats, and tidal creek habitats. Home to over 150 species of birds and mammal species, the park provides a quarter mile trail showcasing their natural beauty. Norman Levy Park and Preserve is a man-made park located atop a hill and providing spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline and Long Island. Once a landfill, this park was once a landfill until a 2000 transformation that also made it the highest point on Long Island's South Shore. The park also offers a number of groomed trails, many including exercise stations for more active visitors. In addition to numerous parks, there are a few facilities for those interested in boating, golfing, and other forms of recreation in Merrick. The Whaleneck Marina and Marine Center provides the community with everything they need for fun out on the water. This two hundred-slip marina is accompanied by a marine center, boat dealership, as well The Boat House Restaurant. Merrick Golf Course is a public facility offering a good challenge to golfers of any skill level. Merrick offers a nine-hole course, driving range, putting green, as well as a small pro shop.
