Livingston is a suburban town of New York City located in northern New Jersey in Essex County. A bustling town with a population of just under 30 thousand, Livingston is a popular area for families to reside with one of or both parents commuting about an hour into New York City. Many residents find its far enough away from Manhattan to avoid the hustle and bustle but close enough for work or an easy family day trip. Livingston has an interesting history, as the town began as booming center for industry. Originally a lumber and farming town, during the 1900s automobile production increased and also brought on an increase in the population. As with any popular area, Livingston as a proportion of its population living and classified as asset limited, income constrained, employed households. However, the proportion is significantly less than it is in other areas of Essex County and statewide. The Livingston Public School System serves children from kindergarten through 12th grade. The schools include Collins Elementary School, Harrison Elementary School, Hillside Elementary School, Mount Pleasant Elementary School, Riker Hill Elementary School, Mt. Pleasant Middle School, Heritage Middle School, Livingston High School and Burnett High School. In 1998, Livingston High School received the Blue Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education, one of the highest recognitions a public school can receive, for excellence in education. It was also ranked #24 in New Jersey schools in 2012. Almost 30% of teachers at the high school hold a masters or doctorate degree. The town's public library, the Livingston Public Library, is also renowned for its vast collection and services provided. The area also has several catholic and Jewish schools that many parents opt to send their children to. Livingston is home to many performing arts programs that add to the culture and diversity of the town. They include the Livingston Symphony Orchestra, the Livingston Community Players, the Children's Theatre of Livingston and the New Jersey Ballet. All of these groups are professionally recognized and known throughout the state of New Jersey, the greater New York metro area and the northeast in general. Transportation to New York City is available via the New Jersey Transit Bus service via the 77 route bus. The bus provides direct transportation to Midtown Manhattan via the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The PATH train is also located about a 30 minute drive away and provides transportation to downtown Manhattan. Many companies and offices are located along Eisenhower Parkway on the western side of town, including CIT Group, Interplast Group, The Briad Group and the Verizon support center of New Jersey.
