Located in Bergen County, New Jersey, the city of Garfield spans just over two square miles and is the home to approximately thirty thousand people. With the Saddle River to the west, Garfield is bordered by Elmwood Park, Saddle Brook, Lodi, and South Hackensack. Garfield is twelve miles west of New York City, ten miles north of Newark, four miles south of Paterson and across the river from Passaic and Clifton. The city has a number of community facilities such as a YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, City Recreation Center, Senior Citizens Center, Health Center, and a public library. There are eleven parks maintained by the Garfield Parks & Recreation department including Riverfront Park located along the Passaic River. Local athletics are also available for community youths to play basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, football, and wrestling. Garfield Public Schools serve the community and its students from prekindergarten through the twelfth grade. The district is comprised of Garfield Preschool, seven elementary schools, Garfield Middle School, and Garfield High School. The Bergen Arts and Science Charter School opened in September of 2006 and serves public school students from kindergarten through the eighth grade. Major roadways through Garfield are U.S. Route 46 and County Route 507. Public transportation is provided by New Jersey Transit's Bergen County Line with stations in Garfield and Plauderville. Service runs to Hoboken Terminal, Secaucus Junction, Penn Station, as well as the majority of New Jersey Transit's other train lines.
