Share Info About Franklin Square
Franklin Square, New York was formed out of Hempstead Plains in Nassau County, New York after the American Revolution. The land was purchased in 1643, but nothing of note occurred until President George Washington passed through the area in 1790, making note that the area was entirely treeless except for a few scraggly fruit trees. The town's next brush with fame came from Trimming Square school being led by schoolmaster Walt Whitman. The Franklin Square National Bank opened in 1926, and was the first bank to offer credit cards to its members. Though this bank is no longer around, Franklin Square was long a leader in the financial industry, also the pioneer of the drive up teller window, junior savings accounts, and no-smoking policies within banks. It is this history that prompted those living in Franklin Square to form the Franklin Square Historical Society, which wrote a book and opened a museum on Naple Avenue in the town. Four public elementary schools and two public junior senior high schools offer education to local students. From there, students can progress to the Valley Stream North Junior-Senior High School or the H. Frank Carey Junior-Senior High School.
