Living In: Flower Hill

Share Info About Flower Hill
Flower Hill is a village with portions in the larger hamlets of Manhasset, Port Washington, and Roslyn, New York. Because of the overlap across all three areas, there are crossovers between mailing addresses, phone numbers, school zones, and taxes. The history of Flower Hill was rooted in serving the farmers who tended to the land in Port Washington and towards Hempstead Harbor. Shipping was a large part of the industry in the area. One of the larger employers in the area is St. Francis Hospital and The Heart Center, which is the top rated hospital in New York State for critically ill patients, and top in the Northeast for cardiac caseload. Transportation options are a long list, from road to rail and track. New York State Route 101 ends in the town, as does the Port Washington Line of the Long Island Rail Road. The N23 bus also offers service to the area, bringing residents from Manorhaven to Mineola and Hempstead. Flower Hill offers residents access to the 511NY Rideshare program. Those living in Flower Hill can use the service for free to have a ride to the Long Island Rail Road station and offer rides to others. Transit options are available and offered in the form or bike buddies, vanpools, and carpools. As stated earlier, residents of Flower Hill can also be zoned for a variety of schools. Elementary schools include private options in Vincent Smith School and St. Peter of Alcantara School, and public John J. Daly Elementary, Manorhaven Elementary, Guggenheim Elementary, South Salem Elementary, and John Philip Sousa Elementary. Private institutions for Junior and High School are Vincent Smith School and St. Peter of Alcantara School. The public middle and high schools are Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School and Paul D. Schreiber High School. Education in the area crosses over to other Flower Hill locations, including Port Washington and Manhasset. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten-aged students can attend The Heights School. Elementary school students can attend Harbor Hill School and The East Hills School. Roslyn Middle School houses those in grades six through eight, after which they can move on to Roslyn High School. A private school option is available for those aged Kindergarten through eighth grade on the former Isaac Underhill Willets estate--Buckley Country Day School. The town has quite a few residents associated with professional sports, being home to the Wilpons -- Fred Wilpon, the owner, and Jeff Wilpon, his son, the COO of the New York Mets. Darryl Strawberry, a former New York Met, and Major League Baseball outfielder, Carlos Beltran, former New York Met and New York Yankees player, Adam Schefter, an NFL reporter for ESPN, and Kentucky Derby winner Jose Santos all live/have lived in Roslyn. Retired National Hockey League defenseman Roman Hamrlik and Newsday columnist on sports Stan Isaacs also live in the village. Other notable residents have included Congressman Stephen Taber, Congressman Gary Ackerman, politician Ken Hecklet, singer Perry Como, and bandleader and march composer John Philip Sousa.
