Living In: Fairmont / Claremont Village

Share Info About Fairmont / Claremont Village
Claremont VIllage (also known as Fairmont) is located between the Bronx River and the Crotona Park East neighborhood. Like other communities in the South Bronx, Claremont Village has a wide range of housing styles from a variety of eras, which makes it easy when you're looking for the right NY apartment. While many blocks are lined with 1970s gated, shingle-rowhouses, others still feature the century old townhouses and brick rowhouses of yesteryear. Most of the neighborhood's northern part, however, is occupied by pre-war, 6-story buildings, where you can find plenty of Claremont Village apartments to fit your budget. Much of this neighborhood is continuing to go through a renaissance--building up from the city's slump in the 1970s. And as several abandoned buildings were torn down 40 years ago, up came the newer, low-rise rowhouses that you see in Claremont Village today. Many urban theorists believed that bringing back the rowhouse in the South Bronx could prevent urban blight from reoccurring. Many portions of this neighborhood, however, have retained their original pre-war buildings--often sporting large, renovated apartments on the cheap. While much of the South Bronx has great access to the subway, this neighborhood only has access at its distant corners. Residents have access to the 2 & 5 trains, which flank the neighborhood at its southern end, Freeman St Station, and at its northern end, 174th Street Station. And though the train isn't around the corner from everyone, it's never more than a 10 minute walk away. At the northwestern corner of Claremont Village is Crotona Park, a 127-acre greenspace with a public pool and 28 varieties of trees. This is a great, nearby space to go on a sunny weekend, when it's expanses and sports fields are packed with visitors. And while most of the local businesses are spread out around town, a few tightly packed blocks of E. 174th Street and E. Tremont Avenue are great spots to find food and shops. So, if you're looking for an affordable apartment in a reviving neighborhood, check out the available Fairmont / Claremont Village apartments. They're sure to have more space and for less rent than you could ever imagine getting in Manhattan.
