Located at the northwestern corner of Essex County, New Jersey, Fairfield Township is home to approximately 7,500 people according to the 2010 Census. Originally comprised from parts of both Acquackanonk and Newark Townships, Fairfield was formed in February of 1798. Covering over 10 square miles, Fairfield, New Jersey is the least densely populated town in Essex County. The Fairfield School District serves the Township with pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade education. West Essex Regional School District provides education for 7th through 12th grades with West Essex Regional Middle School and West Essex High School. The Fairfield Free Public Library was built in 1984 and recently went under a total renovation in 2012. New features include a separate children's library, café with WiFi, and a multipurpose room equipped for meetings, programs, and concerts. Fairfield has a number of parks ranging from small neighborhood locations to large multi-use spaces. Playground equipment was recently upgraded in all Fairfield parks. The Recreation Department organizes programs and activities for residents of all ages. A large swamp, Great Piece Meadows, spans 1,170 acres. Fairfield is home to the Van Ness House and The Fairfield Dutch Reformed Church, both historic sites built in 1720 and included in the National Register of historic Places. Interstate 80 and Route 46 bisect Fairfield; Route 159 passes through the township as well. New Jersey Transit provides public transportation in Fairfield on both the 29 and 71 routes. The Essex County Airport, a public use airport, is also located within Fairfield.
