Living In: Fairfield

Share Info About Fairfield
As is true with most of the towns on Connecticut's so-called Gold Coast, living in Fairfield affords its residents a coveted combination of luxurious expanses of open space, some truly spectacular housing options, easy access to--yet a welcome distance from--urban areas such as New York City, and all of the family-friendly amenities you'd expect from one of the premiere bedroom communities in the northeast. Located within Fairfield County in the southwestern section of Connecticut, Fairfield is bordered by the towns of Easton, Trumbull, and Bridgeport to the north and east; by the Long Island Sound to the south; and by Westport and Weston to the west and northwest. The town of Fairfield is large for this part of the state--over 30 square miles, with a population nearing 60,000--and each of the smaller neighborhoods within the municipality have there own appeal. The most famous communities here are probably Southport, site of many magnificent estates, and historic Greenfield Hill, with its flowering dogwood trees and often-photographed, white-spired Congregational church. But living in Fairfield can also mean being right on the water, in Fairfield Beach for example, which is rebounding nicely from Hurricane Sandy. Other neighborhoods include Holland Hill, Stratfield, Mill Plain, and Knapp's Village. In addition to small pockets of retail stores and restaurants throughout, Fairfield has two major commercial thoroughfares, along Black Rock Turnpike and the Post Road, or US 1. Fairfield in very much a family-oriented community, and at all levels the public school system is considered to be among the best in the state. Also a plus for families (and everyone else): the five miles of shoreline, with five lifeguard-staffed town beaches. Commuters to New York City enjoys ready access to the Metro North railroad, which has three stations within the town.
