Located in Bergen County, New Jersey, the borough of Elmwood Park has a population of approximately 19,500 and spans 2.75 square miles. Fair Lawn borders to the north with Garfield, Saddle Brook, and Paterson to the south, east, and west respectively. The Passaic River runs along the western border between Elmwood Park and Paterson. As part of Bergen County, Elmwood Park observes blue laws, requiring most businesses to be closed on Sundays. The Elmwood Park Public School District serves the students of Elmwood Park. The district is comprised of five schools, Gantner Elementary, Gilbert Avenue Elementary, Sixteenth Avenue Elementary, Memorial Middle School and Elmwood Park Memorial High School. Bergen County Technical Schools offer secondary education programs to all of Bergen County. The Elmwood Park Public Library serves the community and its students with a catalog of over 80,000 items including books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and downloadable content. The Recreation Complex has a gymnasium, weight room, game room, crafts room, as well as a nutrition center and senior lounge. The Elmwood Park Recreation and Parks Department boasts a portfolio of eight parks, all with facilities and equipment for children. Most offer a variety of sporting fields including soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball. The Parks Departments organizes numerous programs year round including sporting leagues for children and adults, and clinics and workshops for various topics of interest. Elmwood Park is home to the Van Houten-Hillman House, an historic residence built in 1782 and included in the National Register of historic Places. Major roadways available to Elmwood Park include Route 4, Interstate 80, U.S. Route 46, and the Garden State Parkway. New Jersey Transit provides the borough with buses 160 and 161 to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan and with local service on the 702, 712, 758 and 770 routes. New Jersey Transit's Bergen County Line has two stations nearby in Fair Lawn.
