Elm Park may be one of Staten Island’s smaller neighborhoods, but you can’t deny it of its prime location. Sitting on the Edge of Port Richmond, residents living in Elm Park can expect a suburban environment yet be in close proximity to NYC and Bayonne, as the New York State Route 440, exit 13 is in Elm park. It is the last exit right before the Bayonne bridge leading into New Jersey. If you’re looking to go into the Big Apple, take 440 to the Staten Island Expressway over the Verrazano Bridge. If you’re living in Elm Park these days, you are definitely living in a neighborhood with its place in industrial history, Richmond terrace, the avenue on the north end of Elm Park was once home to many companies that ranged from clay works, granite quarries, chalk factory that took advantage of local resources. This included companies like; The Arnold & Merritt brickworks, Northfield Brick Company, Parks Brickyard and later National Brick Company,The Richmond Granite Company, H.F. Taintor, and The Standard Varnish Works Factory Office Building, which is an official New York City landmark, built between 1892 and 1893. The Standard Varnish (later Standard Toch) grew to become one of the largest manufacturers of varnishes, enamels and specialty coatings in the world, with factories in North and South America, Europe and Australia. Elm Park offers more than just its unique history. The neighborhood has is home to Port Richmond High School, and two elementary schools. Its also home to the Elm Park Inn established in 1982, and Forest Avenue Shoppers town, a shopping center located conveniently at its south end. Let’s not forget about all the activities Elm Park, and the rest of Staten Island has to offer. Faber Pool and Park is a free recreation center located on the North End of Elm Park and is supervised under the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The park is located on what was once the north shore home of the Faber family. Their lead pencil manufacturing company was begun by Caspar Faber in Stein, Germany in 1761. A century later, his descendant Eberhard Faber (d.1879) came to New York and built the first lead pencil factory in the United States. Faber Pool opened in 1932 to provide children with a safer alternative to swimming in the polluted waters of the Kill Van Kull and to this day still offers free access. The Staten island Zoo is only a mile away in West New Brighton, open all year round! The Staten Island Yankees, a minor league, New York Yankees affiliate is also located only 3.5 miles away on the East end of the island. Other things do near Elm Park include: visiting the Chinese Scholar's Garden, St. George Theatre, a trip to the Staten Island Museum or Children's museum, The Staten Island Mall, The Flagship Brewing Company and more. Needless to say Elm Park is a great location with plenty to do in the area.
