Share Info About East Meadow
Located in the town of Hempstead on Nassau County, East Meadow is a hamlet on Long Island. It is of an average size, measuring about six square miles. It is a relatively well-off and fairly densely populated middle-class enclave, due to both its easy commute to Manhattan and industry in the area itself. While there is no Long Island Rail Road station in East Meadow proper, the Westbury station is right outside the town's limits. Commuters can also travel to neighboring Carle Place, Hempstead, or Hicksville to access the LIRR. There is also significant industry within East Meadow's borders: Getty Oil, Lufthansa Airline, and Swiss International Air Lines are all based within the hamlet. East Meadow was originally a grazing ground for farmers in Hempstead Town to graze their cattle and sheep. Once consisting of only a few large farms, the population gradually rose in the town. During the Gilded Age it was home to many fine estates, including the Barnum Estate and the Brookholt estate. Due to post-World War II development and later suburban sprawl, no actual meadow remains in East Meadow today. Students in East Meadow attend schools operated by the East Meadow Union Free School District. Elementary school students can attend six schools: Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, Meadowbrook, Parkway, and George H. McVey Elementary. Students are then funneled into two middle schools, Woodland and W. Tresper Clarke Middle School. The area is also home to two high schools, East Meadow High School and W. Tresper Clarke High School. For those wishing to continue their education while remaining close to home, Hofstra University is right next door in neighboring Hempstead. East Meadow is home to Eisenhower Park, a large public park in the northwest corner of the area. It is 930 acres in area, which is larger than Manhattan's Central Park. There are many activities for the community to enjoy in the park, including a batting cage, softball fields, baseball fields, football fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a health club, and golf courses, including two miniature golf courses. There is also an outdoor theater that hosts summer entertainment events, including concerts and movies. It is also home to Safety Town, which teaches children safety lessons about fire, traffic, water, guns, and poison. East Meadow also has an active public library that provides services for children and adults. There have been several movies filmed in East Meadow, including Let the Good Times Roll, Married to the Mob, Pieces of April, and The Smurfs. East Meadow has also had a number of notable residents, including basketball player Julius Erving, actor William Fichtner, playwright Richard Greenberg, author Louis Sachar, and Criss Angel: Mindfreak.
