Living In: Darien

Share Info About Darien
Living in Darien, Connecticut, is pretty much the high-end suburban dream come true. One of the most coveted communities in the state (if not the entire northeast), Darien is located in southeastern Fairfield, and is bordered to north by New Canaan (a lovely neighborhood in its own right), to the east by Norwalk, to the south by the Long island Sound, and to the west by Stamford. Darien is a relatively small town, both in physical size (about 12 square miles of land, plus another two of water), and in population (just under 21,000 people), but because it's considered one of the shining jewels of Connecticut's Gold Coast, it has become a symbol for the entire state, projecting an old-fashioned, tasteful prosperity. The town of Darien is divided into several neighborhoods, any one of which would be pleasure to move into, with Noroton, Noroton Heights, Tokeneke, and Springdale being the most well known. This is predominantly a "bedroom community", so living in Darien means you are probably working someplace else, either in adjacent Norwalk or Stanford or, most likely, New York City, which is easily accessible by car via nearby 1-95 or on Metro North commuter rail, which services the town with two stations, Noroton Heights and Darien. There are ample resources for outdoor recreation and leisure in Darien; the town boasts four parks and two public beaches on the Long Island Sound, as well at least seven private country clubs, including a pair of yacht clubs. And if all of that isn't enough to make living in Darien, Connecticut, appealing for families with young children, the public schools in the town are uniformly excellent, and include the top-rated high school in the state. The town is also home to the largest Little League Baseball program in the country.
