Share Info About Bulls Head
Bulls Head is a small neighborhood located in the west-central portion of Station Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City. It is bordered to the south by New Springville, to the west by Bloomfield, to the east by the College of Staten Island, and to the north by Westerleigh and Graniteville. Although it was also previously known as Phoenixville, the neighborhood of Bulls Head derives its name from a pub that was located in the center of the neighborhood in the 18th century: the tavern’s sign included the image of a bull’s head. The neighborhood’s titular tavern was a gathering spot for Tories, or supporters of the British, during the American Revolution. Later, the neighborhood consisted of mostly farmland. This continued through the early 1960’s. This quickly changed after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was constructed in 1964. Then, along with many other neighborhoods on Staten Island, residential developments in the neighborhood exploded in popularity. Children who live in Bulls Head attend elementary school P. S. 60, followed by the intermediate school I. S. 72. Most children in the area then attend Port Richmond High School during their high school years. Port Richmond High School offers many programs for students, including The Gateway to Higher Education, Collegiate, Culinary Arts, JROTC, Medical Technology, and ARISTA, a National Honors Society program. Bulls Head residents pursuing higher education don’t have to go far – the College of State Island, a City University of New York school, is located just outside of Bulls Head’s borders. CSI offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees, as well as certificate programs and associate degrees, through its schools. These include the School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Health Sciences, The Verrazano School Honors Program, and the Teacher Education Honors Academy. Notable alumni of the College of Staten Island include civil rights activist Joanne Bland, musician and political activist Justin Brannan, and Gene Simmons of KISS. Bulls Head is serviced by a variety of transportation options. While the neighborhood does not contain a train station, there are several bus routes that run within its borders. These include the S44, S59, S62, S89, S92, S94, X10, X11, and X17 buses. The northern border of the neighborhood is formed by the Staten Island Expressway, offering easy access to those who commute by car.
