Share Info About Brownsville
Located in eastern Brooklyn, the neighborhood of Brownsville does offer scattered NY apartments, but the majority of housing available here is within one of the various types of public housing projects that dominate the neighborhood. Brownsville apartments are bordered to the north by East New York (and the neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant); to the east and the south by the Long Island Rail Road rail yards (and East New York and Canarsie, respectively); and to the west by Remsen Avenue (and Flatbush). In addition to the prevalence of public housing projects--some report that the community has the highest concentration of such units in all of New York City--Brownsville housing stock also includes a significant number of multi-family, semi-detached row houses. Occasional stretches of tidy, newly-built, single-family, row- house-style homes--constructed, like much such development in this part of town, thanks to the Nehemiah project--complete the Brownsville housing picture. Brownsville has one park for its residents, the Betsy Head Memorial Playground, which includes playing fields, tennis courts, a running track, and a swimming pool that dates back to the WPA era. Commuters living in Brownsville apartments can choose from the 3, J, Z, A, C, and L trains to get to Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. The LIRR, with its East New York stop, gets you to Penn Station in about 20 minutes. The main commercial drive in Brownsville is Pitkin Avenue, though services and stores are still relatively sparse.
