Living In: Bethpage

Share Info About Bethpage
There's a lot more to living in Bethpage on Long Island than pretty homes, quiet tree-lined streets, and world-class recreational facilities, including one of the best public golf courses in the world, the legendary Bethpage Black. Because although this Oyster Bay hamlet, located mid-Island in Nassau County, does, in fact, have an abundance of all of the above, Bethpage is also one of those nicely situated suburban commuter towns, a community that's far enough from New York City to really be able to stretch out, and de-stress, but that's still only about 45 minutes away from Midtown Manhattan's Penn Station, via the Long Island Rail Road express trains. Bethpage is particularly appealing to families with younger children. According to the most recent census, nearly a third of all households in the hamlet had children under the age of 18, and nearly two-thirds were home to a married couple (so, perhaps, there were many who were planning to have children in the future, or who were empty-nesters with children off to college or living elsewhere). No surprise, then, that the Bethpage community prizes the strong performance of its public schools. The commercial strip of Bethpage has all of the expected sorts of restaurants, boutiques, shops, and services, but the centerpiece of the community has to be Bethpage State Park, featuring nearly 1,500 acres of tennis courts, playing fields, picnic and recreational areas, a full-sized dedicated polo field and, as previously mentioned, five 18-hole golf course, including the renowned Bethpage Black, which has played host to the U.S. Open twice in recent years, in 2002 and 2009.
