Baldwin is a hamlet in Nassau County, located in the township of Hempstead, on Long Island New York. Just roughly two miles wide and five miles long, Baldwin stretches from mid-Long Island to its southern bayfront shores. Baldwin Long Island was founded by the Merokes Native Americans who are part of the Algonquian tribe. In 1643 the land was known as Hick's neck because of two settlers John Spragg and John Hicks. A little after a grist mill was built, this grist mill attracted many settlers from all over the northeast, all types of Fishermen, farmers and sheep breeders pick up there bags and settled here. As the growth of Hick's Neck spread west, Thomas Baldwin owned and operated a general store as well as a hotel and many more properties within the community and eventually the new area was named after him. What really put Baldwin on the map was in 1910. Two brothers Arthur and Albert Heinrich had a breakthrough in American aviation history, which all happened in Baldwin New York. They created the first monoplane (a fixed-wing aircraft with one main wing which goes right across the whole plane) these two brothers designed, built and successfully flown in Baldwin Long Island. The location where this all happened which today is currently known as Plaza Elementary School on Seaman Avenue and Rockville Drive. Early development has left its mark in the housing community with a variety of different homes, ranging from older colonials and Tudors to ranches and split-levels. The majority of homes were built before 1939. Baldwin is defined by the single-family homes, but there are also co-ops and condominiums. Baldwin has many attractions to offer its residents, it also has one very large, amenity-filled waterfront park, the town of Hempstead's Baldwin Harbor Park, which is about 15 minutes from the acclaimed ocean beaches of Jones Beach State Park, this area is known for the amazing beach front views and tremendous performing acts throughout the summer months. Families that want a social scene, Baldwin has great options of clubs to choose from. Being so close to the Long Island sound, many families want this sense of community. A widely known one is the Baldwin Yacht Club. The local shopping district along Grand Avenue, the main north-to-south road is filled with great accessories and more. But the Roosevelt Field Mall, the largest regional shopping mall on Long Island, is about 15 minutes away. Baldwin has its own school district, named the Baldwin Union Free School District. Baldwin Senior High School is a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence, and as of 2011, is the eighth-largest high school in Nassau County. Baldwin Senior High School was ranked by Newsweek in its annual list of America's Best High Schools. In 2010, it was ranked #837 in the entire United States. The high school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, varsity sports, and a highly known robotics team.
